The Problem with campus foods

As a college student i can say that i have and will have my fair share of problems while im at school. From academics to peer pressure and building new relationships but the problem that i want to address is the food here at kutztown university. Food is a must at any campus and as students we expect it to be half way decent but unfortunatly here at kutztowns south dining hall they have other plans. The main problems that revolve around this place are food preparation, the taste of the food, meal times, and the prices of the food. I think its fair to say that as students who are puting thousands of dollars into this university, we should get better food contracts. Besides the foods horrible taste, there is also a poor variety of healthy foods available to us to sustain a healthy diet. Sure we have ONE salad section and ONE fruit section but a whole corner for cakes, cookies, and ice cream, not to mention the lack of fruit juices and diary products that we need. Its no wonder that we have a freshmen 15, theres nothing that the dining hall presens that can prevent that from happening, not to mention the stale water from the soda machines.

Another negative about the dining hall is the disgusting maintnace that they have at the grill in the center of the cafeteria, the cleaning window as well as the fruit and salads that they allow to sit for hours on end before they decide to change it, which leads to the smell that follws shortly afterwards. Such preparation of the food here leads to illness which have spread all throughout the campus due to bacteria from not cooking the food throughly and difficulty to digest. I will admitt the south dining hall does have its moments of good food especially in the home cooked section. The thing is that we dont want good food every now and then, but rather every day.

The pricing on the food is ok, but it could be better. Its $4.65 for all you can eat in the upstairs section of the dining hall as well as every where else on campus. The problem is the flex. Lets say that you want to eat at chic fillet instead of the dining hall. The price for nuggets, fries and a drink is well over 4.65 so you also have to apply flex to cover the diffrence. Most people would think that $200 is more than enough to last for the semester. This is not always the case, you have to think about how often you might eat some where on campus besides south dining hall as well as how many times or how much u want to eat. There are also things such as the smoothies in the gym after a work out, the KU POD, coffee, and the other four or five food places on the campus whos prices range far more than the meal price. Im pretty sure that $200 that you start off with will almost be gone within the first month if not used correctly. Im pretty sure that students will be more than willing to pay the prices that they charge for a better variety of food on campus. If not, the prices should be lower for the food that we receive now that we hardly ever enjoy.

  1. Good first post, Shaun, but you should clean up the punctuation and spelling. This is not one giant text message - a blog post requires a bit more formality in its construction - but your voice here is ideal - very conversational, which is good. Looking forward to reading your next post!
